Sometimes a tree causes more problems than it is worth. When this is the case, you are usually best off having the tree removed. A tree removal company will do most of the work, but you will still need to do a little prep and planning. Here are some key things to consider when you're planning to have a tree removed.
Decide whether you want to keep the wood.
Do you have a use for the wood from your tree? Maybe you'd like to have it ground up as mulch so you can use it in your own garden beds. Or, perhaps you'd like to have it cut into logs that you can burn in a fireplace or fire pit. You may also have no use for the wood or no place to store it. Decide on your preferred approach ahead of time so you can discuss this with the tree removal company when you get a quote. Some tree removal companies will give you a better deal if they don't have to haul away the wood. Some don't even give you the option of removing the wood – so you'll need to know if you're willing to hire one of those companies.
Figure out how they will access the tree.
Tree removal companies need to be able to get their heavy equipment back into the area where your tree is located. This may mean you have to ask neighbors to move their cars. It may mean you need to move some patio furniture or rearrange your own yard for a while. Assess how easy the tree is to access, and make plans for increasing accessibility if needed.
Determine whether there are any other trees that need to be trimmed or removed.
Look over all the other trees in your yard. Are there any others that you might want to have removed in the near future? Do any of them need an extensive trim? It is usually most affordable to have all your tree work done at once. You might even want to ask the neighbors if they have trees that need removal or trimming. You could pay together to take advantage of any multi-tree discounts the removal company offers.
If you follow the steps above, you'll be better prepared for a tree removal. Before long, your land will be clear, and you won't have to worry about a dead or in-the-way tree.
