Blog

If you are having a tree cut down in your yard there will be a stump left behind. You have the option of keeping the stump or you can ask stump grinding services company to grind the stump down for you. There are many reasons why stump grinding is the better option. You will also find information below about what you can do to get the area back to normal again.

Reasons to Grind

Stump grinding requires using a mechanical grinder that leaves sawdust behind. Ask the stump grinding service to grind the stump down as much as they can as you will want to plant grass in the area.

The main reason to remove a stump is it takes away from the aesthetics of your landscaping. You could decorate the stump with flowers, etc., but it will still stick out and be easily seen.  You also have to consider that stumps can be tripped over by children or anyone else in your yard. If someone that does not live with you trips over the stump and gets injured, they could sue you.

In some cases, new sprouts will grow where the tree stump is resulting in more than one small tree to grow in the stump area. These small growths are known as shoots and can be expensive to have them removed, especially if there are a lot of them.

Tree stumps can also attract a variety of insects. It will take a very long time for the stump to completely decay and until it does things like ants, termites, beetles, and any other insects that like to bore through wood will be drawn to the stump.

After the Stump is Ground

Once the stump is ground down. You need to plant grass to get the area back to normal again. Someone walking or driving past your yard will never know a tree or a tree stump was ever there.

First you need to remove all sawdust and any other debris. You need to fill the area with topsoil now so you can plant the grass. Add some compost to the topsoil to make it easier to work with.

Go to a nursery and purchase grass seed. Make sure you buy the same type of grass seed that is already in your yard. If you are not sure, take a sample of the grass with you. Plant the seed and keep them watered for the first couple of weeks or until you start seeing grass blades poking up through the soil. Grass generally grows very quickly.

Talk with a stump grinding service to learn much more about how they will grind the stump in your yard.
