Trees have a miraculous way of healing themselves, but sometimes they need a little bit of assistance. If you have some trees on your property that have been damaged in some way, then follow the tree care tips below to help encourage the formation of a callous around the injury and the closure of the wound space.
Cut Away Damage
Trees will close off a wound to keep healthy tissues from becoming exposed to any predators or fungi that can cause more substantial damage. They will also form a callous around the wound that will wall it off and allow for healing. However, wounds are rarely clean and clear of debris, and this can make it difficult for the tree to start the healing process. So, you want to help the tree by cutting away any ragged edges, broken branches, or loose bark.
Start by assessing the tree to see where damage is located and plan to cut back branches about one to two inches from the damaged area. You want to use a clean tool to do this so you do not introduce fungi to the cut. So, make sure to use soap and water to clean the blade thoroughly. Afterward, use rubbing alcohol to remove any residual microorganisms. Since clean cuts are best to encourage tree health, you want to also sharpen the blade if you have not done so recently.
Once you trim away damage, you want to check back on the tree once a week. You should see thick growth slowly building up around the damaged area.
Reshape Trunk Wounds
Sometimes you cannot cut back a damaged section of a tree. This is especially true when it comes to ripped and torn bark on the tree trunk. Thankfully, the trunk can repair itself, but you will need to make some small adjustments to the bark. Since new tree growth builds inward toward the center of the damage, it can be difficult for a tree to form a callous when there are sharp angles across the wound. So, you want to try to form the wound into an oval.
Start by assessing the wound area and removing any loose or damaged bark that you see. Afterward, use a sharp knife to gently cut through the bark to create an oval around the outside of the damaged area. Pull the bark away from the tree and check back often to see if a callous is forming.
