The Importance Of Trimming Mature Trees

Blog

By the time they reach maturity, most trees do not need a lot of maintenance. They have big, strong roots that can extract water from deep beneath the soil's surface, so they don't really need watering. They also have lots of leaves to harness the sun's energy, and big, strong branches to support those leaves. However, mature trees do require a little maintenance — having them lightly trimmed every couple of years is a good idea. Here's why.

1. You can eliminate disease at its start.

Many of the diseases that affect trees are fungal in nature. The earliest sign is often spots and blotches on the leaves and little cankers, or sores, on the twigs and branch tips. If you eliminate the disease at this point, it often will not spread to the rest of the tree. The best way to eliminate the disease, of course, is to have the tree trimmed so the affected branches can be removed. A good tree trimming professional will know how to recognize diseased branches and remove them in a way that won't encourage the disease to spread.

2. You can prevent interference with power lines and built structures.

Trees are beautiful additions to landscapes, but they can sometimes get in the way of man-made structures. The sooner you remove branches that have the potential for interfering, the less damage you'll end up with, and the less damage will be done to the tree itself. Your tree trimming expert can identify branches that are growing in a bad direction, based on the position of power lines, your home, and other structures, and cut those branches away before any issues result.

3. You can prevent damaged branches from falling.

Imagine walking under a tree and having a branch fall down on you. That falling branch could also go through your window or land on your deck. In any event, you don't want a big branch to fall. By having a tree trimmed, you can ensure any cracked branches are removed before they have a great chance of falling. This is much safer for you, and also for your home and visitors.

Contact a tree trimming company near you, and make an appointment to have your mature trees cared for. They don't need a lot of maintenance, but having them trimmed every two or three years will go a long way towards making your existence with trees more pleasant.
